Response to “Dancing” from JODY WILLIAMS,

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Cofounder

of the Nobel Women’s Initiative

I’ve worked in and around war and weapons since 1981—guns, landmines, cluster bombs, nuclear bombs, and, now, killer robots. Killer robots, on the verge of engaging in battle on their own without human intervention, are being called the third “revolution” in warfare: gun powder, nukes, and now killer machines that on their own can target and kill human beings.

Upon learning about killer robots a group of us who had worked to ban landmines and cluster bombs formed a new campaign to stop killer robots. At its root is a fundamental repugnance at the thought that some people actually believe it is morally and ethically perfectly fine to create machines to find, target, and kill other people. So much for the often-heard pro-gun argument that guns don’t kill people, people kill people.

I love the myth of Prometheus stealing fire—stealing some of the god Zeus’s power—for the benefit of humans. I’d like to rewrite it for our times. In my version, Prometheus would steal gunpowder, nuclear weapons, and the makings of killer robots and bury them deep in a cave on Mt. Olympus. To save human beings from ourselves.
