Quick Review
Anticipating and predicting ideal roll path at appropriate ball speeds is the great challenge of putting. Subtle nuances of putting surface and surrounding terrain complicate the task and force us to pay close attention on even the most trivial of putts. To improve your chances of success at reading greens and selecting roll paths, I offered four recommendations.
Be realistic about your chances. The worldâs best golfers sink about half their eight foot putts, and they miss about one-third of their six-footers. Needless to say, they practice a lot more than the typical weekend player. Bearing this in mind will reduce the natural tendency to get down on yourself after a couple of missed putts.
Stay highly curious about roll path and reading greens. Reading greens is the study of a lifetime. The more interest and attention you place on watching balls roll on the green â yours and everyone elseâs â the faster you will gain confidence in your ability to read greens accurately. After examining the surrounding terrain on every hole, employ the GES List to estimate the likely effects of grass, elevation, and side-slope.
Exercise your imagination. Most of the work in putting is done with the mind. Once your GES analysis is loaded into your mental computer, enthusiastically engage your imagination to see the best ball speed and roll path and feel the stroke that will create it.
Be decisive. If you trust your analysis and imagination, you are ready to engage your emotions and approach your putt with an unconflicted mind â with absolute confidence and certainty about your chosen roll path and your ability to roll your putt along it.
