Chapter Eighteen

Mikhail

I should have been doubly humiliated to be assigned one of the twins as my partner on tonight’s first raid, but at least no one was looking to me for leadership in wiping out women and children.

The gambling parlor hit was pretty straightforward like Nikolai said. We split up into three teams of two each. For once, Sasha didn’t make any jokes or smart-ass remarks on our way around to the emergency exit.

“How do we know when to enter?” he whispered once we got into position. “Nikolai didn’t mention that.”

“He probably thought you already knew,” I replied.

“How could I know if he didn’t mention it?” he asked. “I can’t fucking read his mind.”

“They’ve got a big lottery wheel set up in the main hall. The PA broadcasts the sound of falling coins every hour on the hour to let everyone know they’re about to spin the wheel. Nikolai probably forgot that you and Ilya wouldn’t know that.”

He shook his head over his weapon. “Sucks about you losing your position, bratik. You would never forget a detail like that.”

I had to smile at him and I squeezed his shoulder. “I appreciate you saying that, but give Nikolai a chance. He’ll be great once he gets used to being in charge.”

“I don’t want to give him a chance. Why can’t you just come back and take over the way you’re supposed to?”

I looked away. I couldn’t explain any of this to my youngest brother. I wasn’t sure I could even explain it to myself.

“You’ll prove yourself to Papa tonight,” Sasha whispered. “Then everyone will see that you’re supposed to be the Obshchak after all.”

I glanced down at my watch. “Two minutes until the hour. Stay sharp.”

We didn’t say anything else for two long, silent, tense minutes. His confidence in me really was touching. I only wished like hell that I deserved it

I watched the second hand sweep to the top of my watch. “Let’s go.”

We jumped out of our hiding place and stormed up to the emergency exit. I reached it just as the clock struck the hour and the deafening sound of jingling, falling, chiming coins echoed from inside the gambling hall.

I kicked in the door with all my might. Sasha and I burst into a long, narrow hallway and swept our guns back and forth in all directions.

I glanced into the kitchen, saw movement, and sprayed lead all over the place. I leveled seven chefs and three busboys before we moved on. Ten more for the ledger, ten more faces I’d be seeing again tonight.

Sasha kicked in the men’s bathroom and dropped another eight guys standing at the urinals. There was no women’s bathroom.

We stormed down the hall, carpeting every room and doorway in gunshots. Explosions went off in the main gambling parlor up ahead and I heard my brothers shouting on both sides. They were all inside the building.

“Now what?” Sasha called over to me.

I flattened my hand and motioned him against the wall. We inched down it to the other end of the hall and I stole a quick peek into the gambling parlor.
