Not surprisingly, Luke kept pretty quiet for the rest of the day, as I lay in bed under my covers, trying not to feel like shit. Which I shouldn’t. Because there was no reason to feel like shit. Luke and I had had really hot sex twice. Really hot sex—at least really hot sex to me—did not mean we were suddenly married. I’d had sex with plenty of men who never called me again, and that hadn’t hurt.

But I couldn’t deny that it did hurt this time. Not that Luke wasn’t calling, since we lived together and he couldn’t avoid seeing me. Unless he kicked me out. Oh, god, was he going to kick me out? Should I offer to move out?

No, no. There was no way Luke was that much of an asshole. It would just be awkward. Really awkward. All the time. Which. Fine. I would get over it. So Luke wasn’t interested in me. What was I expecting, really? Luke was a catch. He was rich, successful, and built like a Greek god, whereas I was a skinny twink with the tendency to wheedle him into cooking for me. Between me and the bajillion other people Luke could be dating, there was no way he’d pick me.

So why was I so disappointed? And when was I going to get over it?

I remained in bed until my growling stomach told me I’d skipped lunch without realizing it. A glance at my phone revealed about fifty notifications from Instagram, all of them either commenting on the pictures from last night’s buffet or asking me where my usual lunch post was.

Feeling sick today, I posted, snapping a quick selfie of myself in bed with the covers drawn up to my chin. Not feeling like lunch.

A few minutes later, and more comments came pouring in. Have your hot roommate make you some chicken noodle soup, wrote one. Tell Luke you need some cuddles—and soup! read another.

Right. Because the internet was apparently convinced that, despite my protestations, Luke was my boyfriend.

Well, the joke’s on you, Internet.

I groaned, grabbing a nearby pillow and covering my face with it. How was I going to face Luke? Maybe I really did have to move out sooner rather than later. I’d admittedly been slacking off on the apartment hunting since most of my leads were either too far from work or too expensive. I needed to step it up.

Just as I was trying to decide whether skipping dinner was going to be a possibility, there came a rap on the door. Which was obviously Luke. Since no one else lived here.

Maybe I could pretend I was asleep. Sure, it was dinnertime and I hadn’t eaten yet, which was weird for me, but it had been a weird weekend. But I didn’t want it to keep being weird with Luke, even if I had bruised my ego.

It’s not just your ego.

All right, fine. Lots of other soft, tender bits of me were bruised, and not in the fun way.
