Thirty-Eight
AREL LAY ON the living room couch with his eyes closed. Earlier, when he woke up that morning, something felt wrong. Perhaps he was still reeling from his dark nightmares. They were overshadowed by loss. It permeated the dream landscape with a sorrow-filled dirge of mourning. Visions of the grim reaper and graves being dug left him so depressed, he didnât want to get out of bed that day.
Rolphe and Carey seemed determined to help. Theyâd coaxed him from his covers and practically dragged him out into the living room. They told him that Rolphe had composed a piece of music on the piano that needed Arelâs critique.
Arel reluctantly agreed to listen, but he hadnât expected a lot. Rolphe was a decent piano teacher. He was patient and did his best to help Arel understand the instrument, but the man had never played much himself, just a couple of simple songs for beginners. So as Arel tried to get comfortable on the couch, and he thought about how long heâd have to listen to Rolpheâs efforts, he wasnât prepared to be profoundly moved by the manâs abilities.
At first the composition was soft, a whisper of sound. Yet, as Rolpheâs fingers gently coaxed a melody to take on life, the air was stirred. The notes came together like a gentle breeze that brought in a sense of harmony and flow. Arelâs body responded, giving in a little, letting itself be drawn into lingering, resonant chords. The music felt effortless. It offered an ease that soothed and appeased the tension in his muscles and the often frantic workings of his mind.
As his thoughts relaxed, the nightmares heâd had began to dissolve. All the melancholy of the night before slipped away into a misty fog. He began to forget where he was.
As the melody continued on, the stirring went deeper. It searched in places that Arel had forgotten. When was the last time heâd felt his soul? Heâd been so focused on the harsh reality of life that heâd lost touch with any idea of something greater within. Now, that elusive part of him seemed to be calling out.
At first the sound was soft, like the music. But as he acknowledged how long heâd gone without peace or joy, he listened more attentively. The music became a vehicle. Each note was delivered like a prayer being sent heavenward. Each note asked for surrender to something nurturing and giving.
Sound buoyed him up until he felt himself opening his fists. He let go of all the hardness in the world of matter. Stones that could make one trip and fall became elements in a dream. He walked on a smooth path with beautiful gardens. The scent of jasmine and rose filled the air. Color was everywhere, vibrant and alive.
He felt his own vitality and well-being. It was the substance that infused everything he saw around him. He felt free, stripped of burden and basking in a sunlit place where nothing ever went wrong.
As he relaxed in that elevated garden of bliss, he had a moment of clarity.
