Itried to pretend it didn’t matter to me that he’d built our dream house. It shouldn’t—not after everything—but that was just a pretty lie. The truth was that I didn’t want it to change anything between us, but it did. It was harder to pretend he’d abandoned me and stayed away by choice when everything the man had done had been in penance for the wrongs he’d committed against me. I snuck a glance at him out of the corner of my eye, admiring the way the fading sunlight created mysterious shadows across his face as we headed out to the car.

“Do you have plans tonight?” Gideon’s question jolted me out of my thoughts.

I shook my head. “Uh, no. Nothing aside from spending some time in the studio with Nate,” I said, recalling the snippets of conversation I’d overheard earlier.

“There’s a singer we want to check out. She’ll be playing at an open mic night at a club downtown. Maybe you’d like to come and sing?” he asked, glancing at me quickly. I mulled over the idea and found that I didn’t hate it. Getting out of the house and getting my mind off everything—Graham, Gideon, the entire housing situation—didn’t sound bad.

“Sure, but I overheard you and Nate… why do you need me specifically?” I admitted, curiosity getting the better of me.

He smirked and parked in front of the studio, hopping out quickly and rounding the car. Gideon opened my door and held it open with a mischievous grin. “Well, my little eavesdropper, that’s because if Laynie is as good as we hear, she might be your opening act on tour.” He raised his eyebrow and motioned for me to climb out of the car when I didn’t move. Sure, I knew that touring was a part of my contract, but making an actual decision on the opening act, maybe today, was so fast. It made it real.

Very real.

I unfastened my seatbelt and jumped out of the car, squealing excitedly. “Seriously? Oh, my gosh!” I exclaimed, bouncing on the balls of my feet. Holy shit. I was going to go on a tour.

I breezed through the doors on cloud nine. Nate was standing at Kelly’s desk, watching me with an amused smile.

“Laugh all you want, but I’m going on tour!” I punched the air with a goofy grin. He glanced at Kelly and shook his head, chuckling.

“Not if you don’t have a finished album. Let’s go,” Nate said, rapping his knuckles twice on her desk and leading me back to the recording room. I glimpsed Gideon and Kelly deep in conversation before we turned the corner, and I made a mental note to get the full truth about that house out of him later.

The day flew by. Hours felt like minutes when I was singing—they always did. Whenever I felt troubled growing up, music was a constant source of comfort. Music and the Michaelson brothers had gotten me through more in my short years than I could recall.
