Chapter 12

“You’ve been hexed?” Blanche looked worried as Ivy hauled in the first flat of flytraps.

“Moira’s been here.” Ivy sighed.

The ghost appeared in the foyer. “Of course she has! Look at her glassy eyes, her zombie moves.”

Blanche studied Ivy. “She looks the same as she always does.”

“I always look like a glassy-eyed zombie?” Ivy put the plants on a high shelf. Flytraps liked lots of direct sun. “Thanks, Cuz.”

“Did you learn anything from Sharon Masters?” They both headed out to the truck, Blanche grabbing a flat of pitcher plants.

“We had a pleasant talk, but I don’t think their top secret case is related to Monte’s poisoning.”

“That’s what that witch told Ivy to say,” Moira was hopping up and down. “She’s hypnotized. Can’t you un-hypnotize her, Blanche?”

“No more magic,” Ivy said. “I’ve been magicked enough today, and I feel like crap. Yeah, she hypnotized me. She wanted to know if we cured Monte’s poisoning, and asked if Everett was working the case. I told her the truth. I couldn’t do otherwise.” Ivy shrugged. “End of story.”

They finished unloading the truck. Carnivorous plants liked distilled water. They lived in nutrient-poor soil, and evolved to take nutrients more directly by trapping bugs. Ivy searched around, and found a couple gallons in the kitchen. She’d have to buy more. The water was also good for potions.

As she headed into the greenhouse, Blanche jumped out at her. She had her cell phone in mirror mode. Blanche shoved it in Ivy’s face.

By my Dominion over color and light

I immerse you in kaleidoscopic sight

Forget what is false and recall what is right

Only your true memories I now incite!

“Yow!”

Ivy saw a multicolored brilliance that filled her vision. Jugs of water fell from her hands, exploding on the concrete floor. Her knees gave out. She crashed to the floor on her butt with a splash. The floor was wet. Her butt was wet. Her head felt like it had been rung with a sledgehammer. Still blind, she rolled on her side and wretched.

“Sakes alive! Ivy! Ivy!” She felt Blanche’s hands on her shoulders.

Ivy tried to speak, but ended up just making noises. She took deep breaths, trying to calm herself, quiet the pain in her mind. It took a while before her vision cleared. Blanche crouched in front of her, Moira behind Blanche.

“I’m so sorry, that wasn’t supposed to hurt.”

Though she was on the floor, Ivy’s thoughts sunk lower. “I’m getting weaker.”

“You were potioned,” Moira said.

“How do you know?” Ivy croaked.

“’Cause you puked up a bunch of floating blue glitter.” Moira cocked her head. “Better than bugs or snakes or something like that, I guess.”

“Better than, say, actual puke,” Blanche added.

It might explain why Sharon was so easily able to hypnotize me, she thought. That was better than thinking she was getting weaker and maybe just as true. She managed to sit up again. The floor was wet, but the water already spilled down the floor drains. Her clothes were soaked. So was one side of her hair. Agony behind her eyes receded.
