RETAINING BREATH

Close your eyes. Take some conscious deep breaths, then take in a deep breath and hold it and bring your chin down.

Then raise the head and exhale through your nose.

Be awake to the continually changing tones of the breath. Be awake to the blessing of the air flowing in and the air flowing out. Accept each in-breath as the beginning. Accept each out-breath as letting go.

Do this 1–5 cycles.

Wake-up call: imagination

Let your imagination work with no expectations, exercising and nourishing it. Frank Lloyd Wright wrote that “An idea is salvation by imagination” and Henry David Thoreau said, “The world is but a canvas to imagination.” Consider a tropical fish in an aquarium: he believes that the ocean is a ten-second swim from one glassy rock-face to another. We are all conditioned by our circumstances to believe that our lives are typical. Let your imagination rove, and find new possibilities for yourself.
