Surely, I thought, I wouldn’t have to wipe anymore people’s memories. Then it dawned on me that memory wipes only lasted for two seconds, but this time it had lasted six seconds. That meant two other people had performed the memory wipe. Jack couldn’t have since you had to be looking at the person with complete focus, which he hadn’t been.

Ms. Kenley was lost in her own world as the class dismissed itself. She was at the chalkboard erasing her name, writing it again, erasing her instructions, and writing them again. I could only hope her next class was ready for what lay ahead. Her memory had been erased, after all, and she looked like she was really out of it.

I was sure she would give us the rules later on. Art might have the potential to be interesting this year. All the students were walking out the room even before the bell rang. We were on our own at that point. I took one glance back at Ms. Kenley and knew she should have gone home when she had the chance.

I immediately knew that Alex—just then, I felt a tingling at the door. I quickly turned my head, but I turned it too quickly and sprained my neck. There was a black figure at the door casting a solid black shadow on the floor. I stared at the shadow. What?! Did the shadow wave its arm at me? But how?

The figure didn’t move at all. In fact, it wasn’t at the door anymore. I figured he or she thought I was going to pursue him or her. I raced to the door and opened it, but the figure turned around the corner of the hallway. I knew by the time I got to the corner, the person would already be long gone because there were a lot of turns and twists in the school that made it feel like a labyrinth. That hot pursuit was just going to have to wait.
