Beth Hardwell

Eight years ago…

“How can you say that?” Beth screamed. She was tired of hushed voices and swallowing her screams. Victor never shied away from pissing her off, so why did she have to stop herself from yelling at him. It was stupid, beyond stupid. And no one was in the house, so it didn’t matter. They had been yelling at each other for what seemed like forever.

It wasn’t really. It wasn’t a continuous fight. It was a bunch of little fights throughout the day, and that just made it feel like it was never-ending. No sooner had one argument ended than another one began.

He didn’t like her ideas, and she didn’t like his. And he didn’t understand that her ideas were the only ones that mattered. She wanted the bed-and-breakfast. He didn’t want any of it. He was only doing all of this to please her. But he wouldn’t listen to her. She knew what it should look like, not him. He didn’t dream about it. He didn’t research how to draw floor plans so she could show the contractor what she wanted. Why couldn’t he just go away and let her create the place she wanted?

“It’s my money.”

Beth rolled her eyes so hard she felt like she had strained something in her head. He always made that point. It was his money. Everything was his money.

“It’s our money. I contributed too.” She folded her arms across her chest. They were married, and what was his was hers. He always acted like he was the one doing everything, but he wasn’t. She made sure he had a good home to come to every day after work. She kept herself quiet, polite, and easygoing so that he didn’t have a lot to deal with.

“No man likes a loud, ill-tempered wife. You remember that,” her mother had always told her. And she had. She remembered every lesson her mother taught her down to the letter. And she had done it. She gave him what he needed when he needed it. Anticipated his needs and wants before he could verbalize them. She made herself into the image of the woman he wanted. The woman he needed. Bent and broke herself until she fit next to him and nowhere else. Wasn’t that enough? Didn’t all that work entitle her to some of their savings? She wasn’t even spending all of it.

He laughed. She hated his laugh. It reminded her of her father, cruel and dismissive. Like she was so stupid, all he could do was laugh at her.

“Seriously? What you contributed was gone six renovations ago! I put most of the money in, not you. My inheritance…everything is in that account, and you keep spending it!”

She blinked. Her hands slid from underneath her arms and rested at her sides. How dare he…All the rage Beth had been holding in her body…All the feelings she pushed behind a big metal door threatened to burst through. She swallowed. Pushed it further down. Added yet another lock.
