The Man Who Wouldn’t Die

Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin was a Russian peasant who became very powerful at the court of the ruler, Tsar Nicholas II, and his wife, Alexandra – but he also made many enemies. Several attempts were made to kill him, but none of them were successful, until in 1916, a group of men finally succeeded. But it wasn’t easy! Here is what rumour says happened …

First, Rasputin’s murderers fed him poisoned wine and cakes. They waited for the poison to take effect ... and waited ... and waited. It didn’t work!

The killers’ next weapon was a pistol. Rasputin was shot and he fell to the floor. The killers left the room to celebrate, but their celebrations were too early. After an hour, one of the men went to check on Rasputin’s body. He was horrified when Rasputin sprang to his feet and ran out of the door.

The murderers kept shooting at the retreating Rasputin, who was hit in the back and the head. Surely he was dead now?

Not yet! Rasputin was still alive. In desperation, the killers tied him up and wrapped him in a heavy carpet. Then they threw him through a hole in the ice in the nearby Neva River, where he finally drowned.
