GRISHA

Picking up my phone, I think about making this call away from Ksenia, but decide that it has been long enough. Stanislav has kept his own tabs on her, but he’s also asked me many questions about her. So, against my better judgment, to make her smile, to make her happy, I FaceTime her brother.

“Who are you calling?” she asks once she hears the ringing loudly next to her.

“Someone,” I say.

It takes a few seconds to connect, then I hear his voice. “Grisha. What has happened and why are you forcing me to look at your ugly mug?” he asks in rapid Russian. I wonder if Ksenia even remembers Russian, I doubt she uses it often.

Looking over to her, I give her a smile and turn the screen to face her. I watch her reaction, not giving a fuck what Stanislav’s is. This is about Ksenia and nobody else. Her gaze flicks from the screen to me, then back to the screen. I watch as her shaky hand reaches out and she takes the phone from me.

Stanislav hasn’t said a word. It’s Ksenia who speaks first. “Stanis? Is that you?”

“Ksen, you are beautiful.” His words are broken, he is no doubt tearing up.

“You’re Bratva,” she says. Though, she has already told me that she knows he is. She has seen him being tattooed. Maybe she hadn’t expected him to have added so much ink to his skin.

Her Russian is impeccable and I realize that she does indeed remember her language. I don’t know why, but this feels very important to me. It shouldn’t matter, it’s not as if she’s forgotten her life, who she is, or where she came from.

He chuckles. “It matters not. I miss you, sister.”

“You don’t call.”

He hums, clearing his throat. “You know why I have been unable. You’re safe now?”

He’s been unable, partially because he was in prison for a while, but also, in an attempt to keep her safe, he stayed out of contact. I have no doubt that Makar has had eyes and ears on him throughout the years. They would have reported back if Stanislav was in contact with her.

Though, if I were a betting man, I would guess that she too stayed out of reach with him for the same reason, to keep herself safe and to cut off ties so that she would not be found—by me, specifically.

“I am safe,” she says, her voice soft and sweet.

Fuck.

Hearing her tell Stanislav that she is safe, it does something to me. My stomach clenches at the sight of her sitting next to me. She is safe because of me. She may not fully believe it yet, but perhaps it’s starting to sink in… slowly.

I listen to them chitchat for a few moments, all in Russian, and I take the opportunity to grab a vodka for myself and wine for her. There is something soothing about hearing her speak Russian, it’s a sound that I had truly missed. It reminds me of the past. Maybe it was all bad for her, but I had many wonderful moments with her.
