Sam reached over for more meatloaf. It had to be his thirds, or was it fourths? “This is pretty good.”

Heather knew he was only being polite. It was the blandest piece of hamburger she’d ever eaten. “Thanks.”

The other two guys already left, probably on the hunt for real food.

Lane was exceptionally quiet, but ate everything on his plate. He even gave her a compliment as well—but that only made her feel worse. He shouldn’t be so nice. It made it harder to swallow the fact that she was too late to ask him to stay with her.

She pushed an orange piece of pasta around on her plate, not feeling hungry at all. Each noodle eventually outlined the inner white ring of the plate, leaving the roses on the outside edge to stand alone. As alone as she felt even with company at the table.

Heather couldn’t believe that she told Lane to go out with Georgia. It was quite possibly the worst mistake she’d ever made. Okay, so maybe not the worst, but it was right up there with it.

Sam finished off his meatloaf and leaned back in his seat, rubbing his belly. “That was mighty fine, Heather. Thank you so much.”

Ugh. She really wished he’d stop saying that. She knew it was far from that great. But, bless his heart, it was nice to hear.

“So what’s got the lovebirds all ruffled up tonight?” Sam’s question caught Heather off guard.

“What?” She looked at Sam then Lane.

He looked just as surprised as she was.

“If you ask me, and even if ya didn’t, I’d tell you a story about my wife and the first time we had a disagreement. It was actually before we were married. You see, there was this girl, her name was Rita, and my wife Caroline couldn’t stand her. Well, my secret was that I didn’t really like Rita, but I wanted Caroline to notice me somethin’ fierce so I did what I had to do. I went out on a date with Rita.” Sam chuckled as if remembering every memory of the moment in his mind.

It was like he knew what was happening between Lane and Heather, and yet, he knew nothing. It was like magic. And that was something Heather believed in.

Sam continued. “Oh, Caroline was fit to be tied. She didn’t speak to me for a week. But, she came around and eventually we went on our own date. You know, time is never on our side. If I’d known how long I would’ve had with her, I would’ve asked her weeks before Rita to be my girl. You just never know.”

“When did she pass?” Heather held her breath, uncertain how sore of a subject it might still be for him. But the way he talked about her, made her long for that kind of love.

“Oh, about three years ago now.” He smiled wistfully at his wife’s memory.

What a sweet love story. Heather clung to his words like a life line being tossed out there for her to hold on to hope.
