Chapter 8

By the next day, Jasmine had mostly gotten over her anger with Luffy. She had examined the book inside and out, looking for anything she could use. She called Sheriff Lustbader and confirmed it couldn’t be an official part of the investigation, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t use it to think of other questions to ask.

“Jasmine,” Luffy whispered from the doorway.

“What is it?” she asked. She wasn’t mad anymore, but that didn’t mean that Luffy wasn’t apologetic.

“I need to go outside.”

Jasmine nodded. They should probably head out soon anyway. She had called Julie Barnes that morning and asked to talk, which had gotten her a one o’clock meeting. It was around 12:30 now, and Jasmine still needed to walk to the news station.

Luffy took care of his business, and then they headed for the interview. Julie was already waiting for her when she got to the station, even though they were a few minutes early.

“Welcome back, Jasmine,” Julie said as she walked through the building. Jasmine had been there before and remembered it to be a bustling place full of energy and life, but it was not that way anymore. Most of the desks were empty, and the space was altogether unused. “I was excited to get your call. I’m assuming this is another Jack Torres situation where I’ll be writing up your attempts to solve your next case?”

“Actually, this is one of my attempts to solve that case. Sheriff Lustbader said I ought to interview you about the murder.”

“Alright,” Julie said, suddenly less enthusiastic. “I assume you’ll be recording this then?”

“If that’s alright.”

“It’s standard practice,” Julie replied. “I don’t mind.”

“Great,” Jasmine said, and started recording. “I just need to ask you a few questions.”

“I’m sure I can guess them. Yes, I knew Josh Whitaker. No, I didn’t bear any ill will towards him. Yes, we were working together. No, nothing went wrong there, at least not until he died. On the day someone murdered him, I was at an interview. I can show you the file on my computer and send you the phone number of the man I was interviewing,” Julie said all her words in a quick, rapid-fire manner. “Does that about cover it?”

In some ways, it was a great share of information that saved Jasmine a lot of time. In other ways, it left her honestly more confused than when she started.

“You were working with Josh Whitaker?”

“I assumed that was why you were here,” Julie said, leaning against an empty desk. “We were making a real estate deal. Brock’s institute would buy the Book Nook and give me the building for my paper. In exchange, they could have this airplane hangar of a building and all the debt that comes with it.”

“Is that a fair trade?”

“Monetarily I have no idea, but it’s the only way I’d be able to keep the paper alive. We need to downsize, but there’s no space available downtown. I was more than happy to let Whitaker be the bad guy and take down the Book Nook.
