Part Five: The Medyr

Quinn woke to a pounding in his head worthy of an all-nighter. One side of his face felt stiff. He brushed it with his fingertips and felt the roughness of dried blood.

Conor’s face appeared over him. “Dad?”

Quinn squinted. “You okay?”

“Sure. You don’t look so hot, though.”

Quinn fumbled for scraps of memory. They had been coming in to land when something struck the ship... attacked—something had attacked them. “W-Where are we?”

Conor gazed into the middle distance. “Not where we’re supposed to be.”

The side of Quinn’s face felt as if it were about to explode. Holding it with one hand, he eased himself to a sitting position. They were in an empty room. “Where—”

“Some place in Medyr territory.”

Medyr. The name was familiar. His fogged brain tried to remember. “Zothan, Vyasa—where are they?”

“The Medyr are holding them someplace else. Don’t ask me where.”

Quinn pushed to his feet. His legs felt like bent reeds. “We need to speak to someone.”

“The Medyr who brought us here don’t speak English or Nemazi, or if they do, they weren’t admitting to it.”

Quinn lurched towards the open side.

“Careful, Dad. There’s some kind of force barrier.”

Quinn halted. A sheet of air shimmered ten centimetres from his nose. He slid down the wall, closed his eyes, and waited for the room to stop spinning.

“You all right?” Conor asked.

Quinn nodded, instantly regretting the head movement. “Your…”—he was going to say programming but tripped over the word—“other memories. Do they have any information about the Medyr?”

“I told you, Dad. I don’t remember much before our first visit to Ximun’s world.”

Something had changed. Could it be that whatever the Agantzane had implanted in him was breaking down? If so, what effect would it have on the boy?

Quinn heard the click of approaching footsteps. With an effort, he got to his feet again. Four tight-suited figures in opaque helmets rounded the corner. The faceless ones. So his fragmented memory of the attack was not a dream after all.

The lead figure yelled something unintelligible and touched a pad in his gloved hand. The shimmering vanished. He reached in, grabbed Quinn by his mesh garment, and pulled him forward before restoring the barrier. The creatures had no area of exposed skin on which Quinn’s death touch would work, even if he had been inclined to use it.

“Dad!” Conor cried.

“I’ll be fine. Just wait here.” Ignoring his aching limbs, Quinn allowed himself to be dragged away like a sacrificial lamb.
