Part 8: Reaching The Summit
With no plan to speak of, and nothing to our name other than the clothes on our backs, Nazad and I began our journey towards the shining mountaintop. From our place on the beach, the mountain loomed over our heads ominously, and I anticipated a long and arduous climb to reach the summit. Not only that, but a dense canopy of the jungle was spread out like a thick rug around the mountain. As we walked forward I began to worry that this journey would take us several days at least.
So it was to my complete surprise when Nazad and I stumbled upon a well-groomed path! The trail cut a straight line into the heart of the jungle in the direction of the mountain.
âWell! I certainly wasn't expecting to find a trail!â Nazad exclaimed.
âNeither was I. I'm relieved and slightly worried.â
âWorried? Why would a trail worry you, Tomu?â
âBecause it means that someone lives here.â
We didn't discuss the issue further. Despite my concerns, we both agreed that traveling on the path trumped any other option. So that is exactly what we did. Using the path saved us an astonishing amount of time. Instead of hours spent toiling through the dense jungle undergrowth, we walked through uninhibited. It wasn't long before the foot of the mountain appeared ahead of us on the path. A short time later we broke free from the jungle and found ourselves standing before a massive mountain that stretched skyward, thousands of feet above our head. And just as we had been surprised by the path through the jungle, we received another surprise here.
At the base of the mountain was a large cage attached to iron chains. The cage was large enough for several people and inside it was a mechanical lever.
âDo you think that this thing will carry us to the top of the mountain?â Nazad asked.
âWell,â I answered. âThere's only one way to find out.â
With some trepidation, Nazad and I climbed into the cage. My friend watched me with wide eyes as I grasped the lever with both hands.
âHere goes nothing!â I said and pulled the lever towards me.
There was a loud groaning sound from the chains and then the cage lurched skyward! I sat close to Nazad and she squeezed my hand nervously as we rose steadily higher into the air. As we climbed skyward the cage began to sway back and forth from the force of the wind, adding to our fears. Still, the view was absolutely spectacular. From our vantage point we could see over the wall of fog and out across the sea we had sailed the night before.
After several minutes the cage ground to a halt. We had reached the mountain summit! I stepped out of the cage first before helping Nazad. When I surveyed the area where I stood I saw that all around me were shards of glassy metal sticking from the ground! Some were dozens of feet tall, and razor sharp. It was unlike anything I had ever seen before.
