Alexander found that when pupils were learning to direct themselves they exhibited an almost irresistible urge to ‘feel out’ the effects of the directions in order to see if they were ‘right’. However, faulty kinaesthetic perception makes such efforts futile and they interfere with the efficacy of the directions. In most people the idea ‘Am I right?’ seems to be associated with a fixed pattern of tension that prevents them experiencing a new and freer balance. In a concrete way, the Technique teaches a pupil to trust reason at the risk of feeling disorientated, to venture from the ‘known to the unknown’. This journey necessitates a willingness both to make mistakes and to profit by them that is the essence of learning.
