TWO hours later, dressed in his suit and having eaten more than he

could ever remember eating in his life, Jules walked down the via

Filodrammatici, hand in hand with his lover. “You’re not going to tell

me where we’re going?” he pressed.

“Nah, but you’ll see in a minute,” Jason answered with his poker

face.

“You know I hate surprises,” Jules warned.

“You should learn to like them, Jules,” Jason chided as he

stopped abruptly.

For a moment, Jules just looked at Jason. Then the realization of

where they were slowly came over his face, and his mouth dropped.

“This is…,” he began, unable to finish the sentence.

“The Teatro alla Scala,” supplied Jason. “And,” he added, pulling

an envelope out of his pocket, “I have two tickets for tonight’s

performance of Tosca.”

“Tosca? Really?”

“Yes, really.” Jason chuckled. “You like Puccini?”

“I love Puccini!” Jules gasped, taking the tickets from Jason’s

hand and scrutinizing them as if he didn’t believe it. “But how did you

get them? I heard that it’s almost impossible to get tickets to La Scala

at the last minute, especially for an opera.”

“I’ve got a few friends in the business,” Jason explained, guiding

Jules under the brick entryway and through the doors. “Comes in handy

sometimes.”

“I’ve never seen an opera,” Jules admitted later, as they were

shown to their seats in the center of the orchestra section of the

enormous hall. “I mean, I saw some of the opera singers at the

conservatory perform scenes from them, but I’ve never seen an entire

opera.” He took in the gilt balconies that rose all around them and the

enormous curtain that hung across the stage.

“My dad loved opera. He’d take us to Chicago from time to time.

You know, toss the kids in the car and spend the weekend there. Tosca

was one of his all-time favorites. Mine too.”

And as the lights dimmed, Jules took Jason’s hand and squeezed

it tight. Jason couldn’t remember ever having been happier in his life.
