CHAPTER 19

“Hey, honey,” Bryan said when Amanda answered the phone. “Are you busy?”

“Hi! No, the mayor isn’t here right now. I thought you were working out back today. Did you get rained out?”

“No, I moved to the greenhouse, but it’s pouring rain out there now. I’ve got plenty to do in here.”

“Is Mavis working the front?”

“Yeah, that’s why I called. She told me about the body in the dumpster. Everybody says it’s that Owen guy. Is that true?”

“What body in the dumpster?” Amanda scowled and glanced up as Cora Mae walked through the door.

“They found a guy dead in the dumpster this morning at the construction site. You didn’t know?”

“No! How did Mavis hear this?”

“She went in Chervil Drugs this morning to pick up her check and somebody there told her,” Bryan said.

“The mayor just walked in. I need to make sure she knows. I’ll call you back.”

Amanda ran around the side of her desk to Cora’s doorway. “Mayor? Bryan just told me that they found a body in the dumpster at the construction site this morning and it may be Owen Hollingsworth. Is that true?”

“My goodness,” Cora Mae said leaning back in her office chair and kicking off her shoes under her desk. “Word does travel fast. Bryan’s not even in town.”

“It is true,” Amanda said with wide eyes. “That’s awful. His poor wife.”

“I hope Wink can tell her before someone else in town does. With the way gossip races around here, he better hurry.”

“I am starting to get some replies to the newspaper article you did,” Amanda said. “Nothing that seems relevant yet, but we’ve had some replies.”

“That’s good, dear. You keep an eye on it. Conrad told me that Briscoe is doing really well, and he hopes to be home this weekend. Until then, we’ll need to do what we can to help Wink.”

“I asked my mom last night if she’d heard anything, but all I got back is a lot of hearsay. I’m not sure it’s anything worth following up on. I did make you an appointment for today at four o’clock.”

“They may eat me alive with questions if I go in there today.” Cora could just imagine all of the women descending on her wanting information about today’s events.

“You’re right,” Amanda nodded. “Maybe I should cancel it.”

“Hold off,” Cora said. “Let’s wait and see what information Wink decides to release today. If he announces the identity, then there won’t be much more to tell.”

“Wink,” Officer Adam Reynolds said, walking around the piles of garbage spilled across the garage floor. “What do I do with these?” Officer Reynolds held up an evidence bag in each hand. Both contained cell phones.

“Just a second,” Wink said into his cell phone and then placed it against his chest. “You got two phones out of there?”

“Yeah. This one belongs to the victim.” Adam Reynolds held one bag forward.

“How do you know that?” Wink frowned.

“It was inside a leather pouch on his belt. The other was just loose.”

“Dried blood on them?”

“Only on the unknown,” Reynolds said.
