39. THE NUMBER
Heidi perched on the edge of the Piblokto Madness bed, like an expensively coiffed gargoyle, pale knees protruding through the holes in her jeans, long pale black-nailed toes extended over the scrimshawed trim. âNumberâs in your phone?â
âNo,â said Hollis, standing in the middle of the room, feeling trapped. The insectoid wallpaper seemed to have closed in. All the various busts and masks and two-eyed representations staring.
âBad sign,â said Heidi. âWhere is it?â
âIn my wallet.â
âYou never memorized it.â
âNo.â
âIt was for emergencies.â
âI never really expected to need it.â
âYou just wanted to carry it around. Because he wrote it.â
Hollis looked away, through the open door to the vast bathroom, where fresh towels were hung, warming, on the horizontal pipes of the Time Machine shower.
âLetâs see it,â said Heidi.
Hollis got her wallet out of her purse, her iPhone with it. The little strip of paper, which heâd neatly torn from the bottom of a sheet of Tribeca Grand notepaper, was still there, behind the Amex card she only used for emergencies. She drew it out, unfolded it, and passed it to Heidi.
âAmerican area code?â
âItâll be a cell. It could be anywhere.â
Heidi dug in a back jeans pocket with her other hand, came up with her own iPhone.
âWhat are you doing?â
âIâm putting it in my phone.â When sheâd finished, she handed the strip of paper back to Hollis. âHave you thought about what youâll say?â
âNo,â said Hollis. âI canât think about it.â
âThatâs good,â said Heidi. âNow do it. But put your phone on speaker.â
âWhy?â
âBecause I need to hear it. Because you may not remember what you say. I will.â
âShit,â said Hollis, sitting down on the bed, nearer its foot, and switching on the speaker.
âNo shit,â agreed Heidi. âCall him.â
Hollis blankly entered the number.
âPut his name on it,â Heidi said. âAdd it to your numbers.â
Hollis did.
âGive it a speed-dial code,â said Heidi.
âI never use that.â
Heidi snorted. âCall him.â
Hollis did. Almost immediately, the room filled with the sound of a ring tone, unfamiliar. Five rings.
âHeâs not there,â said Hollis, looking up at Heidi.
âLet it ring.â
After the tenth ring, there was a small, nondescript digital sound. Someone, perhaps a very old woman, began to chatter fiercely, demonstratively, in what might have been an oriental language. She seemed to make three firm statements, increasingly brief. Then silence. Then the record tone.
âHello?â Hollis winced. âHello! This is Hollis Henry, phoning for Garreth.â She swallowed, almost coughed. âI just heard about your accident. Iâm sorry. Iâm worried. Could you call me, please? I hope you get this. Iâm in London.â She recited her number. âIââ The record tone sounded again, causing her to jerk.
âHang up,â said Heidi.
Hollis did.
âThat was good,â said Heidi, punching her shoulder softly.
âI feel like throwing up,â said Hollis. âWhat if he doesnât call?â
âWhat if he does?â
âExactly,â said Hollis.
âEither way, weâve moved it forward. But he will.â
âIâm not so sure.â
âIf you felt like he wouldnât, you wouldnât be going through this. You wouldnât need to.â
Hollis sighed, shakily, and looked at the phone in her hand, which now seemed to have taken on a life of its own.
