Anastasia Chewlewsky

Anastasia sits on the red couch nervous. Coming in and talking about her siblings and her parents are one thing, but knowing that today she must talk about herself, her past, her choices for some reason has her on edge. When Dr. Jeffers enters the room, it startles her, and she jumps.

“Hello, Anastasia.”

“Hello, Dr. Jeffers.”

“Anything interesting happen over the weekend for you?”

“No, we pretty much stayed inside. You know this lovely weather we are having goes from hot to pouring rain in minutes.”

“Yeah, Mother Nature sure has a grudge on Texas this year.”

Anastasia laughs. Mother Nature isn’t the only person who holds grudges. “At the end of last week, we left off talking about when I decided I needed to get sober. I have to say I’m just a tad bit uncomfortable reliving those days again.”

“We don’t have to talk about that. I believe we were talking more about how your brother’s addiction led to other addictions and that lead to you being forced into a choice. Let’s talk about how your brother’s addiction affected your family.”

“Let me see if I can remember how it all started. I didn’t prepare notes this time.” Anastasia closes her eyes and fidgets with the sleeves of her sweater.

“My stepson Rene was 16 and my oldest son Shane was 14 when we all went to clean the atrocious mess at my parents’ house. My brother had been arrested again and left a huge mess in his room. My mom had just had hip surgery, so we made an agreement to help her clean the mess. Unbeknownst to me, Rene had stolen an aspirin bottle that someone had turned into a marijuana pipe and the stash of synthetic marijuana my brother had kept in his room. A few days after returning home, my husband at the time had found the pipe in our washroom. When questioned, Rene admitted taking the pipe but didn’t tell us about the stash. He said he was curious, but that he wasn’t using and when he got home, he had to hide it, so he put it out in the washroom so that it wasn’t in the house. Dumbfounded and shocked, we could not believe our boys would ever do anything like this, so we grounded him told him it was just as illegal to possess paraphernalia as it was drugs. Rene had just gotten his driver’s license so taking the car away for two weeks and making him ride the bus to and from school seemed like a fair punishment at the time.”

“Two weeks later when Rene began driving to school again in a random search of the parking lot with a canine the dog alerted on his car. They pulled Rene from class and searched the car. In a gym bag, in the trunk of the car, they found a Ziploc baggie with 4 different brands of synthetic marijuana. Yes, count them 4. I didn’t even know at the time there was more than one brand. Imagine my shock when the school police officer called me at work to inform me of what they found.
