Priceless Books Stolen from Multnomah
County Library, Guard Wounded
By Charles âChuckâ Grayson,
Editor, Urban Street PDX
A security guard was severely injured last night at the Central Branch of the Multnomah County Library when he tried to prevent the theft of books from the libraryâs rare book room, according to the Portland Police Bureau incident report.
Library security guard Elliot Mark Delaney, 67, is in the critical care unit at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Northwest Portland with a deep neck wound. His condition is listed as âgrave.â A member of his medical team not authorized to comment on the case suggested they might need to induce a coma to allow Mr. Delaneyâs brain to recover from the massive blood loss. He was unconscious and struggling to breathe when paramedics arrived. The wounded man was discovered by a second guard who could not raise Delaney on his radio. Delaney had been making routine security rounds at the library when the incident occurred.
Police sources report that Delaney, father of four and grandfather of ten, apparently caught the burglar in the act and attempted to prevent the theft of an unspecified number of books in the Edward S. Curtis North American Indian series. A complete set recently auctioned for nearly $3 million.
Curtis was famous as a photographer and a man passionate about creating a record of Native American cultures he believed were headed for extinction. Besides photos of native Americans, Curtis and dozens of assistants made recordings of tribal languages and documented their customs. Curtis published his first book in 1907. Volume 20 came out in 1930.
âThey are priceless,â said William Bowman, curator of the John Wilson Collections of rare books at the central branch of the Multnomah County Library. âLosing even one volume is catastrophic. Losing seven is incalculable in terms of lost scholarship, as well as a major library asset.â
Said Bowman, âBefore the theft we owned a complete set of Edward Curtisâs The North American Indianâ20 original volumes of text, plus 20 volumes of large folio prints. These were acquired by the library directly through an exclusive subscription when they were published. Funds were supplied by a large group of prominent Portlanders who were acknowledged in volume one.â
