“Just wanna know what to call you, Jack Ross.” Travis caught a glimpse of a rifle holster hanging on the other side of the man’s saddle. Travis tried to be casual as he led the horse down the street, glimpsing at the rifle to see a unique mother-of-pearl inlay on the handle. Travis recognized it instantly as Mayor Albert Castle’s ceremonial rifle. The man in the saddle, that Jack Ross, was a living connection to the murder of the mayor—at least, as close as Travis could come.

But he had to be careful. The man was injured and seemed near to collapse. And he had to be subtle, lest he spook the man. He had no way of knowing if he’d tell the truth about how he had gotten the rifle. And, in fact, having the rifle was no proof that the man had done the deed. But he could have bought or stolen the rifle from the guilty party, and he’d be the only person who could identify who that might be.
