Chapter Twenty-Five
âI canât believe you want to free this asshole,â Dani said as we marched up a footpath through the mountains. âYou do know that heâs the one who created all these problems for you? And your mother.â
âOf course I know that,â I said. âHe did it because he needed to save her. Not because he wanted to hurt her.â
Dani looked at me stonily over her shoulder. âSeriously? And you bought that? This from a being who spent the first few centuries of his life murdering everyone and everything in his sight? He went so overboard that Odin literally sent two gods after him to imprison him for eternity. What do you think one more human life is to him?â
âGiven that he saved her and didnât just kill her in a fit of bloodlust, that tells me that maybe, just maybe, thereâs some truth to his story,â I said quietly. âBesides, talk to him yourself when we get there. Heâs not insane. He knows what he did, and heâs remorseful. About all of it. Thatâs why heâs lived here, in the middle of the Underworld, mostly isolating himself from society at large. To protect them.â
âHe also has a Blood Letter out on him,â she said. âAssuming what you said about the bounty hunter is true.â
âI know.â Iâd told her all about what had happened after Queen Eleniaâs palace, including our encounter with the bounty hunter. The only thing Iâd left out of my story was my growing concern over Aaron.
Not that he wouldnât be okay. I didnât fear the bounty hunter would harm him. He was too good of bait. Sheâd hold on to him, knowing weâd surface eventually, and banking on one of us coming to rescue him.
And that one is me.
My concern was about my feelings toward the vampire. He was the one I thought about when I fought the Hunger. Memories of him strengthened me, and I was worried about what that meant.
âWe could just leave him here,â Dani suggested, and not for the first time.
I sighed and moved past her as she came to a halt at a fork in the path. I took the right-hand route and continued. We were close now, and I didnât want to waste any more time.
âHeâs coming with us,â I said, recognizing one of the stone markers up ahead, hurrying my pace.
âI donât get it?â Dani asked as I turned down the path that would lead us to the caves. âWhy are you so insistent on him coming with us?â
âBecause,â I said as the pathway ducked into the outer cave, revealing the inside and a figure lying on the floor, âI need him to teach me how to control this thing inside me. He can do it, and I need to be able to as well. If I donât, Iâll never be comfortable walking on Earth again.â
âAbout time,â Fenrir rumbled, shifting his hips slightly, though his upper torso lay flat to the ground, the collar around his neck keeping him pinned.
