CHAPTER NINE

Victor sat on the side of the bed fully dressed, watching his queen peacefully sleep. They moved to the bed after the first time and made love again, repeatedly, until they fell into an exhaustive sleep. Loving her last night had been the single most memorable moment of his life. She completed him in a way that was hard to put words too. Her blood satiated him like no other, but there was also something faint in her essence. It was something he couldn’t quite place, but reminded him of the ancients. Victor shook his head. It wasn’t possible, or was it? So many unanswered questions, but the first issue was obliterating the threat to Gracie’s life. He didn't want to leave, but he couldn’t let the danger to her grow either. He would be back as soon as possible, but couldn’t take a chance with her life. Carefully, so as not to wake her, he compelled her into a deeper sleep.

He contacted his second in command through their private link. "Thomas, I need you here protecting my queen. Choose only the men you would trust with your life to guard her. If anything happens to her, your life is forfeit. She means everything to me."

The response was instant. "As you command, my liege. It'll be done. Be there shortly."

Victor gently pushed a strand of long dark hair off her shoulder and leaned close to kiss her forehead, savoring her scent, and the silkiness of her skin, before he rose, and walked out of the room. He glanced around the cabin’s interior. It was sound, but he took the time to put a magical seal on every door and window. No one, human, vampire, or other, would be able to break through his safeguards to harm her. As long as she stayed within these walls, she was safe.

Victor sighed deeply while running his hand over his face. He was tired of constantly looking over his shoulder. The life of the King was not what one would expect. Constant threats and treachery for the throne left him in a state of heightened defensiveness, and he hated it. Victor’s gaze rested on his queen relaxing so comfortably in the bed. He wanted nothing more than to scoop her into his arms, and disappear, but he knew it wasn’t possible. Responsibility weighed heavy on his shoulders. Protectiveness for Gracie brought a dangerous glint to his eyes. No one would take her from him, and he would kill whoever tried.

A disturbance outside the door drew his attention. His guard had arrived. It was time for him to leave. He glanced one more time toward the bedroom door and inhaled. The scent of their lovemaking saturated this cozy cabin and it gave him a small measure of satisfaction.

Striding to the front door he opened it and stepped out onto the porch to meet his guard’s pinched gaze. Taking the steps down into the yard, he addressed his second in command. "Beware, there's treason and possible war for the throne in the air.
