Chapter Twenty-Six

Steel and Tony arrived at the apartment where Amber was found. Steel took the keys from his pocket and headed for the lock. The guard was gone, but the police tape remained. He looked over at Tony, who had a wary look on his face as if he really didn’t want to go in.

“If you can’t do it, I will understand,” Steel said in a soft, reassuring tone. Tony felt almost insulted at the accusation. But the more he thought about it, the more he realised he was angry with himself, for if he couldn’t bear to go into his dead girlfriend’s apartment, he was letting her down. Tony gave Steel a shallow nod. Steel cracked a smile from the corner of his mouth and nodded back. He slipped the brass Yale key into the lock and turned it until they heard the click of the bolt release.

“You think we missed something?” Tony asked as they entered.

Steel said nothing at first, he simply headed for Amber’s room. As Tony entered, he saw the huge stain where the blood had soaked into the floor. He stopped and stared for a moment. Flashback images of Amber’s mutilated body lying on that spot returned. Steel stopped and looked over at Tony. He knew what he was going through.

“Tony,” Steel gently called over. He knew that the more Tony relived that moment, the less likely he would be able to stick around. Not that he should have been there in the first place.

“Hey, Tony,” Steel yelled loudly: since the soft approach didn’t work, he’d decided to play it rough.

Tony looked up at Steel with an almost dazed look.

“Listen, Tony. This time you’re here for Tara. If we find her, it may lead us to Amber’s killer. You take Tara’s room I will check Amber’s,” Steel explained.

Tony shot him a puzzled look. “I thought you just said we were here for Tara. So why would we look in Amber’s room? We never found anything last time,” Tony said, missing the point.

“No,” John went on patiently. “I said YOU’RE here for Tara. You said there was nothing at her other apartment, so the chances are there may be something here we have overlooked.”

Tony nodded and walked over to Tara’s room, opened the door and walked in. He didn’t know why they were there. He had already checked the room days ago to try and find out who the roommate was. He pulled on a pair of latex gloves and started to search for anything he could find. There’d been no visible signs of her having a computer, so he hoped for at least a diary.

Steel entered what had been Amber’s room. Most of her stuff was still in boxes that took up that main part of the sitting room. The room was decorated in a ghastly pink colour, and there was not much in the way of furniture. A double bed rested against the left-hand wall facing the window. The wardrobes were built into the walls to save on what little space there was.
