CHAPTER TWENTY

Danny wrapped the rubber tubing around his wrist, twisted it tight, then waited for a vein to pop up on top of his hand.

Noah sat nearby, watching. “Why are you doing that?”

“It’s my infusion. I’m a bleeder.”

“I know that. But why?”

Danny sighed. He was really glad for some company but sometimes the kid got on his nerves, asking a million questions about everything. Where do you live? Why’d you let the man bring you here? Where do you go to school? Isn’t your family looking for you?

But it was the things Noah told him about Doctor Clow that really bugged Danny. Things like, “It’s dumb giving yourself those shots because you’re never going to get out of here.”

Still, it was Noah’s remarks that made Danny start thinking in a different way. That gave him the courage to go ahead with his crazy idea.

He was going to do it. No matter what. Something really, really bad could happen, but he had to try.

When Noah asked him about his parents for what seemed like the hundredth time, Danny decided to ask Noah a few questions. “What about your parents, Noah? I’ll bet they’re worried about you too. Do you miss them?”

“Sure, I do,” said Noah. “Just like you miss your mom.”

“What’dya mean?”

“I mean now that she’s gone.”

“How’d you know about my mom?”

Noah frowned. “You told me.”

“I did not.”

Noah frowned, quiet for a moment. Then, “Being in here does that to you. It makes you forget things.”

“Not me. I haven’t forgotten my mom or my dad. Or my dog.”

“I know something else,” Noah said.

“Yeah? Like what?”

“What it’s like to die.”

Jeez. The kid was smarter and a little weirder than he looked. “Whattya mean, Noah? What it’s like to die?”

Noah tipped his head and gave a tiny smile. “That’s for me to know and you to find out.”

“You know what, Noah? I don’t think that’s very funny, okay? It’s like, y’know, creepy.” He looked at the clock on the wall. Eleven-thirty. Time for action.

“So, I’ve got this idea, Noah. Want to hear it?”

No answer.

He spun around. The room was empty. “Hey! I’m going to get us out of here, so you better be ready.”

No answer.

Danny took a deep breath and let it out slowly. The kid had no doubt wiggled his way back through that little door to go hide.

He’d just have to do this thing without Noah.

He unplugged the lamp on the big table and examined the cord. It wouldn’t take long to strip off an inch or two of the cord’s insulation. The hard part would be getting the plug off. He’d better get started.

He began twisting the plug. Easy at first, then it tightened up and got harder. He had to do it this way because there was nothing sharp in the playroom. He kept twisting the plug, slowly, methodically. He even chewed on it, put the cord on the floor and pulled. What he wouldn’t give for some good, sharp clippers like Dad kept in the garage.

He worked at it for a long time, glancing up at the surveillance camera, afraid Clow might be watching.
