âWhat the hell is going on in there?â Callan asked when he joined Adam in Paigeâs living room. Thanks to the bugs and cameras theyâd planted in the Presidential Suite, they captured everything on three separate monitors.
âIâll be damned,â Adam ground out, unable to provide Callan with any other reply. He could watch for himself. And drool.
âFuck!â Callan said, taking a seat. âAre they doing what I think theyâre doing?â
âNo,â Adam remarked with a great deal of sarcasm. âTheyâre playing strip poker. You missed the card game. They all lost.â
âWhat happened while I was making sandwiches? I left the room and Connor was playing hero. I come back and now heâs no better than the villain?â
âYou missed plenty. Jeff revealed something heâd discovered on his own. Apparently, Paige was physically abused by Ramone. She has a fear of being alone with one man.â
Callan leaned closer to the monitors. âYeah, by the looks of it, sheâs scared to death.â
Adam laughed uncomfortably, watching as Connor fingered Paige. âIf sheâs frightened, sheâs getting over it pretty quick, huh?â
âJust our luck, eh?â Callan said, patting him on the back. âJeff gets her adrenaline pumping, and Connor slides in for the save.â
âHeâs sliding somewhere,â Adam pointed out, âbut I have a feeling Paige doesnât need saving.â
âSheâs still toying with them?â
âSheâs a player, Callan. Some women, just like men, are born with it.â
âIf what Jeff said is true, then sheâs still a victim. It doesnât matter what goes on with our buddies, she has a lot to overcome. They shouldnât be doing this, not now, when her ex is in town. Sheâs vulnerable.â
âA woman who can move like that between three men is no manâs victim. If anything, sheâs developed a defense mechanism to play the part of unsuspecting prey, helping herself to a better position if sheâs caught in the line of fire.â
âMeaning?â
âYou can see for yourself,â Adam said, nodding toward the screen. âBy the time sheâs done with them, theyâll kill for her. Iâd bet dollars to pennies, theyâll be willing to die for her, too.â
âYouâve been without a woman for far too long. One piece of pussy canât do all that.â
Adam swiveled around in his chair. âWars have been fought over women who havenât bent over for, or knelt in front of, the man taking up arms in her honor. And you think that wonât change a guy? Iâve never seen anything like it, not even in the movies.â
âYeah,â Callan agreed. âYouâre right. Paige could ruin a fellow.â
âIâd fight for her,â Adam said, winking.
âMe, too,â Callan grumbled. âBut while you and I are fighting, it looks like our friends will be the only ones shooting off anything substantial.â
