CHAPTER 11

The suit felt heavy, cumbersome. More so than when they’d trained in them. Perhaps it was the added pressure of the situation – of imminent reality – weighing her down.

‘These look great!’ said Mary, a small woman whose stomach was almost as large as her personality. ‘I love what you’ve done with the design.’

Rebecca looked down modestly at her creation. The hazmat suit was black, but plastered on the middle, right in the centre breastplate, were the letters GEF, written in red. An outline of the earth circled the letters in white, blue and green. Stencilled drawings of North America, South America and Asia were on the perimeter of the earth.

Underneath was their motto: Earth First. Civilisation Second.

Her organisation’s logo.

It was something she’d been incredibly proud of. Something she’d created and designed herself. A movement she’d started. A movement that she hadn’t thought in a million years would gather supporters. A movement that was going to make a change, make a stand against the corrupt governments and their illegal and money-driven agendas. Make a stand against the reckless lack of acknowledgment towards global warming.

Rebecca would make them see it was a danger. Make them all sit up and pay attention to the very immediate threat it posed towards society.

‘I knew those sewing lessons my grandmother gave me would pay off at some point,’ she said.

A light chuckled floated around the Green Earth Federation.

Everyone was ready, wearing their hazmat suits and gas masks. Rebecca took a moment to admire them. Here they were, a group of seemingly random individuals from all walks of life, fighting together for one cause. She’d never felt prouder to call herself a ‘tree hugger’, even though she despised the term.

‘You’re all looking marvellous,’ she said then turned to face Wayne. ‘I think it’s time we had a look at what you all risked your lives over.’

‘If you think so…’ Wayne squeezed her arm before wandering over to the back of the lorry. On the floor was the two-metre-long canister containing lethal amounts of radioactive waste they’d stolen.

She could already begin to feel the onset of nausea and radiation sickness kicking in. All of a sudden it became very real.

Cautiously, Wayne approached the canister with a pair of metal tongs. He removed the lid with them, shoved them inside, tussled with the waste and eventually pulled the rod out.

‘Careful you don’t drop it!’ Mary cried out. ‘Otherwise it’ll all have been for nothing.’

With his arms extended, Wayne moved over to the table.

‘Steady, mate,’ Jeremy said. ‘Lay it down on the table carefully. OK. Right. We don’t have long, so we need to be quick. I want everyone to step back a foot or so. That’s it. Now – Wayne, pull it closer to the edge of the table.’

Jeremy disappeared to the corner of the room and grabbed a tin bucket. ‘Open up the rod,’ he continued.

Wayne did as he was told. Within seconds, the highly radioactive pellets began to decant into the bucket like coins in a charity collection tub.
