Chapter Seven

My brain screamed at me to run, but I wasn’t sure if I would be running into trouble or away from it. Besides, I didn’t want to give away my position to whatever had broken the glass. My heart raced, I had no idea what I was dealing with, and no idea what I was going to do about it. So, I did the only thing I could think of, and continued toward my original objective.

It was doubtful that Ekhar had placed any guards in the tunnels now, considering she’d just released something from inside the labs. She expected it—or them—to finish me off before I reached the exit.

I followed the map on my data-pad until I reached the stairwell, resisting the urge to bound down them like a child waking up on their birthday and going downstairs for presents. Although, hopefully with a lot less terror coursing through their minds.

I’d made it down three flights when scraping from high above had me still, my breathing surely giving me away considering how loud it sounded. My heart pounded. I had no idea why I was so afraid. Maybe the remnants of whatever I’d been drugged with? Maybe I was losing my edge? I shook my head; definitely not the latter.

The decision to keep moving forward was an easy one; no one wants to stay still while something unidentified decides to make you their next meal. The scraping from above was louder now and was followed by an almighty bang, and roar that shook me to my bones.

I gave up on being quiet and took the steps two at a time, bounding down the stairwell to burst through the partially open door at the bottom and taking off at a flat sprint down the tunnel beyond. My footsteps echoed around the narrow, dimly lit space, the prickles of gooseflesh on the back of my neck rising with each step, but I dared not stop or slow, and I certainly wasn’t about to look behind me.

I hit the door at the opposite end at high speed, and it swung open, slamming shut behind me as I found myself in a room with several benches and two doors. One had the word tram written on it in big yellow letters, which gave a pretty good idea about where it went, and the other was just coloured blue. I grabbed the nearest bench and pulled it behind the door, jamming it between the sides. It wasn’t going to do much to anything determined, but it should give me a few seconds. I yanked open the blue door and ran down the tunnel. It was big enough for two people side-by-side, and I had my energy pistol out just in case I’d been wrong about Ekhar, but the tunnel was empty.

The tunnel twisted and turned as it moved deeper underground. As I reached another blue door and pushed it open to leave, roars and screams of rage bounced down the tunnel toward me. What
