Angel

Darkness quietly descends on the hills of Switzerland, and I have a front row view from my seat in the Land Rover.

The silence sits comfortably between Klaus and I. I don’t feel like I need to make conversation. I also don’t want to interrupt whatever thoughts he may be having, too.

I trust him enough to get me out of this mess.

But I can only sit in a car for so long ‘till nature calls.

“Uh,” I ask once the winding roads ahead of us are pitch black, shuffling in my seat. “Is there uh…”

In the reflection of the lights on the dash, I see him glance at the clock. “There’s a gas station coming up in about three minutes.”

“Perfect.”

And sure enough, the welcoming red and yellow lights of an Esso garage appear on the horizon. “It’s probably time we stretch our legs anyway,” Klaus says with a heaving sigh. He unclips his seat belt and makes his way over to my side to open my door.

Even in an ‘05 Land Rover, at a gas station while I’m on the run, I’m still treated like Royalty.

He takes one look at me. “Here,” he says, reaching into the backseat and giving me a baseball cap. “Shove that on.”

I know the power of a simple hat better than anyone, so I happily oblige.

The bright lights of shop burn my eyes in contrast to the dark night. Klaus heads straight over to the counter, distracting the shop attendant as I slink into the restroom at the back. When I come back out, he’s holding two paper cups.

“Tea?” he offers with a small smile. Under the harsh lighting, I can tell today has been hard on him, too. Stress is dragging down the bags under his eyes, tugging at the corners of his mouth.

“Thank you,” I say, curling my hand around one of the cups and enjoying the warmth radiating underneath the cardboard.

Klaus’s eyes shift towards the cashier for a half a second, before sweeping his arm out towards me. “Let’s go,” he mutters.

I’m feeling a lot more alert after my restroom break; I’ve snapped out of the lull that the combination of darkness and a heated seat brings. “Tell me about your family, Klaus,” I say, taking a sip from my cup.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see him raise a brow. “My family?”

“Yeah.”

“They were just your average working-class citizens. Mom was a cleaner, like I said, and my father was a baker.”

“So how did you end up…” I don’t know if it’s the tiredness from a long day of travelling, but I can’t quite find the word.

“Knowing your husband?” He chuckles.

Now he’s said it, I know that’s exactly what I mean.

“I was smart when I was a boy. Real smart,” he muses. His eyes are still on the road, but with the look in his face, the windshield could have easily been a window into his past.
