Chapter 24
Getting out of the city proved to be relatively easy. By the time I had left Ilanâs house and made it to the gates, the guards were all but gone from the city streets. In fact, there appeared to be no more out than had originally been patrolling when Iâd made it into Haxi.
That was good. It meant that they were going to look elsewhere for me, and Haxi was the only city that I would need to come back to. While Gria had traded with many different cities, Haxi was the one she had most recently been visiting, and it was unlikely that someone far away would have enacted the spell. It was a powerful and difficult act to send someone to Nowhere, and they would have needed to be somewhat close to her.
I sighed as I walked through the wilds towards the Wylde encampment where I was to meet Ishtar and his people again. A part of me, a small part, had thought about leaving and trying to find another bridge back to Earth.
It was a tempting decision. Diego or The Order might be able to get me out of my predicament. But I promised to help the Fae, and I always lived up to my promises. Furthermore, Gria was in very real danger, and I wasnât going to leave her to suffer.
So, instead of going out to explore on my own and try to find a bridge, I walked back in the direction of the encampment, stewing in my thoughts.
I needed to find out what was going on with the demon. It didnât seem connected to Gria, not really, because both the demon and Ilan had said that no one was hurt in whatever it was that he was having doubts about. Gria had been hurt; sheâd been sent to Nowhere, damn it. That wasnât something you ever recovered from.
Even now, I could feel the haunting memories of having been there, threatening to rip at my sanity. And I had only been there for a little while, not even a full day by the Faeâs manner of counting time. Which didnât actually mean a lot to me, because I didnât know how to compare the Faeâs counting of time to the way we counted time on Earth, but still I didnât think Iâd been gone very long.
That short amount of time had still scarred my psyche. Gria had been there much longer than me already, and every second that ticked by was just adding more to her sentence, further damaging her psyche. Yes, she had the sacred grove to hide in, but how much longer would she be able to hold that magic keeping it in place? Eventually, she was going to have to face the horrors of Nowhere, and that was going to break her, I thought.
From everything that Iâd been able to learn about her, she was a sweet, kind woman, not the kind of person who could truly survive in a place as dark and terrible as that.
