THIRTY

LOGAN RANCH

When Rachel got back to the hall, the power had come back on.

Bruce was still waiting, but not where she had left him. He’d moved farther inside and was standing in front of the hall table staring up at the only professional portrait she had of her small family.

It had been hand-painted after Joey’s birth. She was seated, holding her baby boy in one arm with her other wrapped around Susan. Max stood behind them, splendidly dressed in his uniform and flashing his smile that always lit up a room.

The sight of the renter’s greedy eyes drinking in this scene sent shivers through her.

“Great picture. The perfect family.” Bruce turned to smile at her. “Are you taking them to the festival?”

Was he just making small talk, or did he have an ulterior motive? He was staring at her with a quizzical expression. If she didn’t say something, he was going to get suspicious.

“Yes. They wouldn’t miss it.”

“I always wanted a family like that but never seemed to have the time. Maybe someday I will.”

“Maybe so. Families are wonderful.”

“It’ll be too late for my mother to see it, God rest her soul, but my dad will be happy to see his son finally doing something normal, like raising kids, instead of trekking all over the country with a canvas and a box of paints.”

The word normal sliced through Rachel with the efficiency of a surgeon’s blade. The contents of Bruce’s desk drawer announced loud and clear that he was anything but normal.

“I brought you a towel.” She thrust it at him as if he were a flaming bonfire that might burn her house down any minute. “You must be cold from all that rain.”

“I am. Thanks for the towel.” He peered at her through wheat-colored hair that, dampened, didn’t even look natural. In fact, everything about the man standing in her hallway now made her think of a hollow shell who had conveniently filled himself up with the attitudes and opinions he thought might belong to a famous artist.

“A fire would be nice,” he added “but there’s no fireplace downstairs.”

She’d as soon cozy in front a fire with a rattler as invite him into her den.

“I’d invite you to join me in the den, but I’ve got to get in the kitchen and get busy now that the power’s back on. Hank will be here any minute, and he’ll be starving.”

“Where is he?”

Was Bruce suspicious? Curious?

Rachel realized she was still as tightly wound as a woman getting ready for fight or flight. She forced herself to relax and give him what she hoped was an easy smile.

“He got caught in traffic because of the storm, as I imagine you did. He holed up a bit in the laundromat down the road to call me.” She glanced at her watch, trying to exude confidence. “He should be pulling up any minute.”

Bruce studied her so long, a hot flush crept into her cheeks. She felt guilty and vulnerable, all at the same time.
