When we pulled up to my house, the first thing I noticed was dad’s rig in the yard. I was glad he was still here; that meant I didn’t have to hear Nichelle’s mouth or continue where we left off at the restaurant. I wasn’t in the mood for all of that. The little time I spent with Kejuan tonight had me thinking differently.

“Enjoyed yourself?” Larah smiled, looking over at me.

“Yes, girl!” I clutched my chest, pretending to faint.

“Good! I can see your nose opening as you speak.” Larah cocked her head to the side and popped her lips. “I know it’s early in the game, but ain’t no time limit on love, girl.”

“I’m not in love, Larah.” I slumped my shoulders.

“But you feeling him… hard. Jyreese and I were looking at the two of you across the lake, and it’s definitely something there between you guys. All I’m trying to say is, you’re never going to find love from someone in this shitty-ass town. Not while Sakina’s thirst-trap-ass is here. And let me not exclude, Jemila’s sneaky self, cause she is known around town to get hers by any means,” Larah said, causing me to laugh.

“And what about Jyreese? You feeling him?” I asked.

“He’s aight. Jyreese is not my type but he’s cool. I could see myself keeping in touch with him, but I already have a love in my life. It’s long-distance, but still.”

“He wants to see me again tomorrow,” I said.

“And let him! Don’t miss out on this opportunity at love, Eshe. From listening to Jyreese, Kejuan is he and Lourell’s boss. He told me that Kejuan is single… The man is probably looking for his wife, girl! And that could be you, Eshe.”

“Really?” my brows heightened. “He was coming on pretty strong tonight, but not in a bad way.”

“That’s probably because his mind and heart are already set on you!” Larah said.

“I feel you, Larah. But I’m not going to throw myself on him. If it’s meant to be, it will be.”

“True, but still, Fran. Don’t sabotage it on purpose, is all I’m saying. If the man is showing you that it’s you he wants, and you’re feeling him, then go with it. Get the fuck out of Rochdale, cause ain’t nothing here for you but heartache and pain from Nichelle’s crazy butt!”

“I love you, friend!” I stretched out my arms as Larah and I hugged.

“I love you, too. Now, go and get that beauty sleep for your future man tomorrow.”

I crept into the house, trying my best not to make a sound. From the outside, everything looked pitch black. But as soon as I stepped into the living room, there Jemila was, sitting on the sofa, watching Tv and eating ice cream. I didn’t say a word as I softly trailed by.

“Mama’s been asking about you?” she said, and I rolled my eyes.

“So,” I replied and carried on to my room.

I closed my door and started to undress. Just as I took my top off, my room door creaked open.
