The town was deserted. Craig, people had once called it, according to the road signs labeling the area. At first Abby thought a man name Craig owned everything. Signs for Craig Auto Wrecking and Craig Wool Warehouse and Craig this and Craig that were posted throughout the town, but then Ash explained that this was how towns and cities had worked, how businesses often took the name of the places they were located. A strange custom, and wholly uninventive, she thought—at least to her creative mind.

They crossed over the Yampa River and reached the edge of town by midmorning. It had been two days since they’d abandoned the cave, along with Mentat’s offer and his body, and Abby had yet to tell Ash about her curative blood, and the longer she kept it from him the more she feared his reaction to the news. Whether or not she believed Mentat also still weighed on her, though she was beginning to lean toward crediting Mentat’s claim. Keira had woken up the previous morning, rejuvenated, as if springing out of a long sleep, and seemed youthful despite her age. No trouble met them on their quick descent out of the mountains: a welcomed change from the preceding days. The two dogs scouted ahead as they walked along a crack-infested road called Ranney Street.

“What are we looking for?” Abby asked, shading her eyes with her palm.

“A main street,” Ash said, unaffected by the bright sunlight. “You’ll know it when we come across it.” Yellow grass grew tall all around them in the areas where buildings and vehicles didn’t take up space along the blacktop. The cars and trucks were rusted and weathered as they’d been in Glenwood Springs, and the buildings were tall, metal crumpled shells, discolored hulks that somehow stood despite the years of decay. More buildings cropped up the farther north they went, until they came to a stoplight—that black rectangle with three circles running down the center.

Ash pointed at the blue sign bolted to the long steel arm. “This is it. Victory Way.”

“How do you know?”

He banged the trunk of a gray sedan. “Simple. There are more cars.” The dogs skidded to a stop beside him, his hand outstretched for tongues to lick. She noted the dogs did that often. “So now all we have to decide is right or left.”

Abby surveyed right, then left, then right again. Both directions looked bleak. “Left,” she decided arbitrarily. The dogs sniffed the air to their left and barked, taking off.

“Left it is.” Ash followed. “We’ll have to hit a few different stores to find quality gear. First we should look for an outdoor supply shop to find you a weapon. A cross will probably be best for you.”

“A cross? Like what some of the elders pray to?”

Ash cocked his head as though he’d no idea what she was talking about. “A crossbow. It’s like a blend between a gun and a bow. It’s easier because you load the arrow and the frame holds it in place.
