Chapter Fifteen

VD used the prisoner as a ram and pushed his enemy through the thick foliage. The young soldier was uncooperative. VD didn’t care about leaving signs and he didn’t care if this scrawny rag-wearing rebel lived or died. In fact, he preferred it if he died. VD marched them through the forest on a bearing and barely deviated, until he heard a shout to their front.

“Halt, who goes there?” came the challenge.

VD recognised Delvin’s voice. He stopped and took a knee behind the prisoner.

“It’s VD with a prisoner,” he shouted back, just loud enough for them to hear.

“Oh, thank God! Come on, we’re over here,” Maddy called.

VD stood and pushed the boy forward and followed the sound of their voices.

“Oh, my goodness,” Maddy said, “who is this?”

“Here,” VD said and pushed the soldier towards Delvin, “take this bastard and get him something to drink, make sure he doesn’t escape. Tie him up and watch him carefully, he’s shifty.”

Delvin took the prisoner and set him down with his back to a tree and poured some water from a bottle into his open mouth. Maddy came up close to VD and stood next to him and looked into his face. She had her hands on her hips and wiped perspiration from her lip and then held her hands up.

Her eyes followed his and searched his face.

“He’s sick,” VD said quietly, “I had to leave him.”

She took him by the upper arm and led him away from the others. Fabrice watched them go.

“What do you mean, you left him?”

VD explained what had happened and looked at the top of the trees as he did. He was feeling guilty and unsure of himself. And it was getting late. It would be dark soon.

“How far, where is he?” she questioned.

“About an hour back down the path I’ve just beaten through the jungle,” VD said, “As soon as you’ve finished chatting, I am heading out to go and find him.”

He said it with more aggression that he intended. He was feeling threatened and accused. She stood for a moment and looked at her feet and crossed her arms in front of her chest. She dropped her bottom lip and shook her head.

“No,” she said.

“What do you mean, no? This isn’t a discussion lady, I am going to find my friend. Full stop.”

“VD, no you aren’t. Christ! Look around. It’ll be dark soon. We have no camp. We have a prisoner with us now. You said so yourself, no-one moves around the jungle at night.”

“Well, I’m going. You can do what you like,” VD said and moved to walk past her.

“And me too,” Fabrice said and stepped closer to them.

Maddy took a step back to let him into the circle.

“We don’t know who those men are or what they want,” she said.

“That’s why I brought him,” VD said and pointed at the soldier on the ground, “get him to tell you. Make him do it.”

He gritted his teeth. The light faded and VD moved to get himself ready.
