CHAPTER NINETEEN

Billy couldn’t wrap his head around the situation. Here he was riding in a sleek car, a Bentley Azure no less, beside Keith as if they were out for a leisurely drive in the countryside on a Sunday.

Billy liked his cars. Aware that this convertible had only recently arrived in UK showrooms, with a 6.75 litre engine, which was turbocharged, he knew that this thing could go like a rocket, hitting sixty miles per hour in just over six seconds.

The vehicle was spotless, with not a single speck of dirt in sight. The dashboard gleamed, and the overpowering scent of sandalwood air freshener burned Billy’s nostrils.

Despite the stress of being abducted, he found sitting with Keith strangely comforting. Yet there was also an underlying sense that the man could switch gears unexpectedly – metaphorically of course – and not in a good way either.

Maybe it was Keith’s composed demeanour mixed with the scars, remnants of serious fights. He imagined Keith wasn’t the type to have a roll around on the floor throwing a few punches. He was either ex-Army or he’d had a row with a butcher. Yet despite his scars, his dress sense was impeccable. Even his nails looked manicured.

‘Shall I take you to the hospital first?’

‘No,’ said Billy. ‘I wanna give you back that briefcase and be shot of you.’

‘I don’t blame you. I can’t believe those two idiots actually physically assaulted you.’

‘I’m not worried about that. I’m worried about my family. Me brother will be so upset. I know he will. And both of me mums will be smashing down doors trying to find out where I am, and I bet they’ll start with Jimmy.’

Keith’s ears pricked up, hearing the name Jimmy. ‘You said Lenny is your blood uncle, so if Jimmy’s his brother, is Jimmy also your uncle?’

‘No, he isn’t. He’s worse! He’s my father, my natural father, at that. Not that we have anything to do with him as a family. He’s a right bastard. He attacked me mother . . .’ Realising that he had probably told Keith too much, he said, ‘Sorry, I don’t wanna talk, I’m tired. Are we nearly there?’

‘Not long, mate. So, tell me about your dad, this Murphy geezer.’

‘He’s a good dad, and he’s down the police station. They’re accusing him of killing Lenny, but I know he didn’t. He wouldn’t. You see, he cares a lot about all of us, so he wouldn’t do anything stupid like that . . .’ The thought of his father being in prison made his throat close up.

‘Now listen to me. My boss, the Governor, is very . . . shall I say, particular. He likes things done in a certain way. He is a stickler for time and sticking to a plan, so how are you going to do this? Because I bet your family won’t let you back out once they see the state of you. They will want to interrogate you to find out who took you, won’t they?’

Billy hadn’t thought about how he would return the briefcase.
