Lexington

I hadn’t seen Carter since I left her in the ballroom yesterday. I’d wanted to. It’d taken more restraint than I knew I had to stop myself from searching her out…and that worried me. Something had changed between us. I wasn’t sure what, how, where, or when it happened.

It shook me.

I sat on the edge of my bed and rubbed at my chest, but it did nothing to relieve the tight, hot pressure. I’m a mess. I scrubbed my face with both hands then took a deep breath. We’d agreed the day we found our marks that we’d put us on hold, on the back burner until we got our lives settled. We’d agreed we both had too much on our plates to handle such a stressful thing.

What kind of asinine joke was that?

Put being soulmates on hold. Who does that?

What is wrong with you Lexington?

It’d only been a week since I met her – my soulmate – and yet it already felt like a lifetime. I pushed up my black silky sleeve and really looked at the mark that made her mine, and me hers. I’d been naked in the shower when I’d found it and I hadn’t let myself inspect it much then or since…like I was punishing myself for something that was entirely out of my control. Something that was supposed to bring me peace and happiness.

It was quite beautiful, too. I ran my fingertips over the lines and felt my lips curve into a smile. The story went that whenever we were in First Realm this imagery would be replaced with words…the first words we said to each other, more specifically. I couldn’t recall what those exactly were, but I knew they weren’t favorable for either of us. She’d said something about Krav Maga? That’ll be fun to explain to people.

The funny thing was, I could see little bits of us in this. And if I was being honest with myself, I knew the lily was more representation of me than her. The rose was blatantly beautiful and vibrant just like Carter, but packed a sharp thorn stem – just like Carter. Whereas the lily had sharper, pointed petals that was both a literal and figurative visual for me.

My phone vibrated in my pocket so I pulled it out – and sighed. It wasn’t Carter, and apparently I was hoping it would be.

I chuckled at my own ridiculousness and answered the call. “Hello, Liza.”

“Lexingtonnnnn,” my baby sister whined through the phone.

“What? What’s wrong? Your party is about to start.”

“I knowwwww,” she whined again but her voice fluttered this time.

I smiled and got to my feet. “What are you nervous abo—”

“Are you dressed and ready to go?”

I frowned and glanced down at myself even though I knew I was dressed. “Yes?”

My bedroom door flew open and slammed into the wall. Liza stood on the other side with her blonde hair styled in pretty waves and baby’s breath flowers braided into one side. Her make-up was golden and
