Chapter Nine

Adam woke to the bright sun piercing the building. It had to be past noon. The space beside him was empty, but Tirian’s scent lingered. He looked at himself, disoriented. Naked. He’d never slept naked since…

He stood up, ignoring the twinge of muscles from a night of riding. He saw a pair of Tirian’s boxers folded on the swag cover and lifted them up. Pulling them on, he went in search of his guy. Nope, he’d have to say mate—that was what Tirian called him.

He found Tirian in the shade, dressed in Adam’s silk shorts, squatting down, arranging river pebbles and quartz granite on the ground.

“What’s that?” Adam asked, eyeing the design. It was similar to a Gordian Knot, but within it, a labyrinth of lines and swirls made from tiny crystals shards. The whole thing was maybe three metres in diameter.

“Sweet man, this is a talisman. It’ll protect this property and all within it. Always.”

“Do we need protecting?”

“Danger walks in this world, as in any other.

Yes, we need it.” Tirian glanced at him, his eyes admiring. Adam grimaced. The boxers didn’t cover the scars. In the harsh summer sun, he must be a freakin’ sight.

“Sight, yes,” Tirian said, standing.

“It wasn’t…”

Tirian cupped Adam’s cheek. “You’re beautiful.

I’m damaged, so are you. Does that mean you love me less? Or that I love you less?”

“No!”

“Exactly, sweet mate. I love every imperfection.”

“You have a way with words, dude, that makes me want to come just by listening.”

“I’m pleased to hear it.” Tirian smiled, flicking back the hair from his eyes.

Adam frowned. Cripes. Tir had to know that move was sexy as all hell. He was at it again— seducing. Adam stared, realising just how little he knew of Tirian, or his kind. The guy was magic. And he didn’t play fair, tormenting with every trick at his fingertips and hooves and horn. The bastard.

Adam cleared his throat. “I’m going into town for supplies. And to order our bed. There’s a carpenter there who makes the most amazing furniture. I kinda thought a king-size four poster might be appropriate. You want to come with me?”

“No. Everything I desire is here.” Tirian’s sapphire gaze sparked.

Adam bit back his smile. Ignore that innuendo and that look, he told himself. “There’s chocolate in town.”

“Too many calories. I prefer to eat you.”

Adam’s mouth turned desert-dry in a heartbeat. “You’re a sexy little beast.”

Tirian grinned. “Besides, I’m not yet comfortable with humans. They look at me…”

“Babe, probably just as well you stay here. You go into town and the girls and guys’ll devour you.”

Tirian snorted. “You may devour me. No other.”

“I’ll devour you when I get home.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

“Right.” Adam strode to the caravan and made brunch, watching as Tirian built the protective symbol. The sunburn on his back was gone, his skin lightly tanned, a contrast to the silver pale hair. Tirian worked, oblivious to Adam’s scrutiny. Or so he thought, but as he watched, Tirian’s bending became more like posturing, sexy and provocative. The silk boxers rode up his arse.
