“Gregory,” Mr. Best says quietly. “There’s a man in the office to see you. It may be your father.”

Gregory catches his breath and traps a knot of happiness in his throat. He leaves the classroom without even getting a pass. Dashing across the green lawn, he startles the crows. He pushes open the double doors of the office.

There stands Dad—his cowboy boots, his big hat, his jewelry, his thick, long braid hanging down the back of his coat.

Gregory runs to him and hugs him with both arms, pressing his face against Dad’s leather jacket, smudged with dirt, smelling smoky, like the inside of the house at Bird Springs.

“Had a heck of a time finding you, son.” Dad sits down in one of the blue plastic chairs and looks up. “You’ve gotten so tall. . . .”

Gregory smells the sage on him. A song winds in and out of his heart to the rhythm of Blackie’s gallop.
