Psychotherapy

Whichever medications prove to be best for a particular patient, research shows that combining psychotherapy with drug therapy is more effective than either alone. Psychotherapy usually combines talk therapy with behavior modification. It can be administered by a psychiatrist, psychologist (professional with a PhD in clinical psychology who is licensed to provide psychotherapy, but not to prescribe drugs), social worker, counselor, or psychiatric nurse.

One common type of psychotherapy is cognitive behavior therapy. This helps patients change negative thought and behavior patterns by recognizing how viewing themselves in a negative light leads to harmful emotions and behaviors. As bipolar patient Denise Krischke writes, “When the medications allowed me to achieve some sort of balance, a therapist helped to reshape negative thoughts and behaviors, experienced and unintentionally developed into habits during the darkest times. Life takes on a whole new perspective once the chemical monsters are fought. One then has to deal with the internal struggle of having a mental illness and the public’s perception of the disorder while attempting to become well.”32
