Chapter 15
Avery wasn't altogether certain he could keep his promise to Amelia, but it sounded nice. Someone as rich and prominent as he was wouldn't face prison time. He didn't think so anyway. They could claim asylum in District X and the authorities would have no reason to return them. As long as they laid low, and didn't go back to District M. They only walked in the woods for about an hour before finding the road that led to the storage facility. They were tired, but the pleasant conversation kept them occupied enough.
Amelia told stories from a fragmented memory, claiming that each time Steven erased her, she'd still retain a little. She was funny and pleasant. Her expressions were childlike, yet charming. Her brown eyes shimmered in the morning sun, and her cheeks rounded out when she smiled. Avery was taken by her curvy figure, but even more mesmerized by the way she spoke. She was articulate, yet strangely naive to the world. As they came upon the storage facility, a bionic woman with dark hair and green eyes came out to greet them.
âWhat can I help you with?â she asked.
âI need access to my storage bin. My motorcycle is in there and I want it,â Avery said.
âSure thing. Just let me get your name,â she said.
âIt's Avery....Avery King.â
âOkay,â she smiled clacking away on her computer. She looked up at him with a troubled expression. âMr. King, you're a wanted man.â
Amelia's heart jumped in her throat, squeezing his hand with all her might. She knew they were being found out, and didn't like it.
âWhat do you mean?â
âWhy Silas Jones, of course. He expects you to let him know when you're in town. Do you mind if I send him a notice?â
âSilas wants to see me?â
âOf course he does. He has every business in town on notice that if they see Avery King, to let him know.â
âOh. Of course. By all means, let him know,â said Avery, fidgeting with his fingers.
A news report came up on the television screen behind the bionic employee. She smiled while she clacked away on the keyboard. The news reporter had a somber look on his face.
âA bionic humanoid is on the run after having escaped a holding tank during testing. The BRF and Steven Whitemore are offering a reward for anyone who knows of her whereabouts.â
A picture of Amelia flashed on the screen of her long, dark hair and big brown eyes.
âShe's about 5'3â with brown hair and eyes. She is not thought to be dangerous, but she is malfunctioning. If you have any information, call the number below. The reward is 100 thousand credits for anyone who can find her.â
Amelia held tight to Avery's arm, knowing that they were after her. The bionic employee never looked up until she was done typing. Luckily the screen changed to the next report before she ever registered that Amelia was the bionic on the run.
âAh ha, here it is. I'll activate the lock for you, Mr. King,â she said.
