Chapter 3

I knocked on the door to Drake’s study, but entered without waiting for a response. He was sitting behind the large desk. Smiling, he beckoned me toward him. “I wasn’t sure if you would come,” he said, clearly pleased that I had.

“I have questions, you have answers,” I responded flippantly and he laughed.

“Violet told me you could be … what did she call it … oh yes. Cheeky.”

“Why am I here?” I asked, hoping the direct approach would work with Drake.

“I have a gift to give you,” he said, pointing to a small box on the corner of his desk. “Go on, open it.”

I untied the ribbon on top of the box and lifted the lid. Inside were a platinum credit card and a set of car keys. “What are these?” I asked.

“Keys to a convertible and a credit card with no spending limit.”

“No. I meant, what are these, a bribe?”

“I suppose that depends on your perspective,” Drake said. “Some might call them rewards.”

“Rewards for what?”

“For making a personal sacrifice so that your mother can continue living here.”

I wondered what kind of personal sacrifice he was referring to. “Tell me more,” I said.

“On that serendipitous day when I walked into Lucy’s diner, I had no idea that I would meet the woman who would become my second wife. Or that I would have to actually buy the diner and close it down before she would be desperate enough to marry me.”

Drake was the strip mall developer that had put my mom out of work? I was so confused! “What are you talking about?”

“She kept your senior pictures at the diner and showed them to anyone willing to look at them, including me.”

“So?” We had already established that my mom was proud of me.

“When I saw them, I must confess that I was smitten.” He got up from behind his desk and walked around the mammoth piece of furniture, approaching the spot where I was standing. Reaching out, he brushed a finger across my cheek before running a strand of my long, silky hair through his fingertips. The gesture was both sweet and sexy.

“The pictures were beautiful and told me so much about you,” he continued. “In them, you were already a woman, and had the curves to prove it. But the innocence and joy on your face also told me that you were a rare flower that hadn’t quite fully bloomed.”

He was so close to me that I could feel the heat from his body and was certain that he could hear my heart pounding in my chest. I felt like I was in some sort of trance.

“I asked Violet to be my date for the charity dinner so I could learn more about you,” he confessed.

“I thought you did that to piss off your ex wife.”

He left shoulder raised in an almost imperceptible shrug. “That, too. But mostly I wanted to hear more about Violet’s beautiful daughter,” he explained. “Imagine my surprise when she confided in me that you were still a virgin.
