Vic now accepted the things down here as real. He’d always had a solid understanding of the way the world worked and had come to believe it held no more surprises for him. He’d seen life at its sunny best with a second chance at love and happiness with Kelsey, and at its worst in the unspeakable crimes of the human monsters he’d encountered.

Now his beliefs were shattered. Knowing he’d been so wrong numbed his brain. Along with the realization, however, also came the overwhelming feeling that Kelsey was down here somewhere. He knew it. It was as if being within a certain radius of her set off an alarm in his soul.

From behind a row of faux trees, he and Tony watched Roland take questions. So far they’d been lucky. There were enough things in each area that they could stay out of sight. When Roland led the group out of the room, they waited a few seconds. They were about to move, but they heard footsteps behind them. A fortysomething man in a white doctor’s coat passed by. The detectives read each other’s expressions and burst from their hiding spot.

Tony put his hand over the man’s mouth with a finger to his own lips. “You yell or make a sound and you’re dead. Understand?” Tony whispered.

The trembling man nodded, and Tony let go of his mouth.

“Where are the women?” Vic asked.

“Women? I just work here. I don’t…,” the man stuttered.

“Don’t,” Vic whispered and pressed his gun to the man’s face so hard he could feel it against his cheekbone.

“Oh. Okay. I thought… Okay.”

“Take us to them. Right now.”

“I’ll do whatever you want.”

Tony grabbed his shoulder and pushed him.

“Go,” Vic ordered.
