LIGHT AND HEAVY SYLLABLES IN POETIC METER

1. Light syllables (laghu) are those made up of short vowels which are not followed by more than one consonant (anusvra “” and avagraha “” included), either within a word or between words. Light syllables are short, half the length of heavy or long syllables. For example, nm o vipdy (underlined vowels indicate light syllables).

2. Heavy syllables (guru) are those made up of long vowels or those made up of short vowels followed by more than one consonant (anusvra “” and avagraha “” included), either within a word or between words. For example, nama vupdya (underlined vowels indicate heavy syllables).
