THE COMMONS
You and I,
We sit together
On the commons,
My head on your lap.
Others there with us
On the commons.
A couple sit
Facing one another.
A child alone
Follows a blond dog,
Leading him
Away from them.
Full fall in abeyance.
Dry leaves, gold and green.
We sit alone,
Separate on the commons.
All afternoon
We gather
Sparse leaves
One by one.
They grow into
A dry-leaf haystack
On the commons
In early fall.
You in a bonnet,
Warm in a pink and blue cotton dress
Covering lovely arms.
Your ankles peek out.
I watch you rise,
A summer butterfly.
You step onto the haystack
And, resolute, you ascend,
Leaving me there at dusk
Alone, content at last
On the commons.
