Opie Read authored more than fifty books, including My Young Masters (about the Civil War), Odd Folks (stories and character sketches about personality quirks and unusual events in the lives of ordinary people), and The New Mr. Howerson (about a man driven into the fold of an anarchist group in Chicago around 1910). Throughout his writing career he was openly compared with Benjamin Franklin, Joel Chandler Harris, and Mark Twain. Opie had many famous friends, among them Twain, William Jennings Bryan, Theodore Roosevelt, James Whitcomb Riley, Warren G. Harding, and Eugene Field.

Opie Percival Read died at his home in Chicago on November 2, 1939. He was nearly eighty-seven years old. On one of the last days of his life, he recited a poem for Maurice Elfer and told him a few jokes.

In the end the boy who wanted to fight to music gave the people of his native land a new song to sing when they needed it most. His experiences during the Civil War years remained in the back of his mind, and he explored them often in his writing. Reed A. Baird described Opie’s legacy in an article for the Tennessee Historical Quarterly: “[Opie Read’s] role was that of a mediator between the North and the South, whose double vision enabled him to perceive the strengths and weaknesses of both sections. . . . He helped to heal the wounded psyche of a nation torn by civil war.”
