The woman behind the Pro Desk says something to let us know she is a liberal. She looks the part of an old hippy from Vermont, which it turns out she is. Her name is Jackie.

“I’m the only one in the whole store,” she confides, showing me the Bernie pin on her apron.

“Good luck with that,” I say, sarcastically.

Robert leans in, mock-whispering, “Let’s hope Trump don’t ruin everything.”

Behind us in line, as they have been all week, men and women seem to be speaking in code, whispering about prizes and games won.

“Ah, you don’t like Trump either.”

Her look is conspiratorial with a whiff of sarcasm.

Robert looks over at me with eyebrow raised.

I say: “No, not at all. He’s the worst of America.”

“Obama then?”

She seems unimpressed as she says it.

“A big fan,” I reply. “Not perfect, but a classy dude who cares.”

When Robert nods in agreement, Jackie joins in.

“Well, we need a change.” Then, as punctuation: “Just not Trump.”

She pauses for a moment, her face turning serious as she folds the long receipt scroll in half and hands it to me.

“You know what it feels like?” she asks. “Game on.”

We nod in agreement.

Robert adds: “There’s nothing in us, or around us, that is broken or that can’t be fixed. We can’t let any sort of bitterness or anger or hatred take over.”

“You’re right,” Jackie says. “The system is broken. Not us.”

Robert grabs my arm.

“That’s what I’ve been saying.”
