MEN HELP

Woman was created to be a helper for man, but that doesn’t mean that only women are helpers. As we saw, the Bible often describes God as a helper. In the Old Testament, the Psalms praise God for helping His people: “Behold, God is my helper” (Ps. 54:4); “You have been the helper of the orphan” (Ps. 10:14). In the New Testament, Jesus calls the Holy Spirit our Helper (see John 16:7).

In the Old Testament, armies and foreign countries are also described as helpers: “They will know that I am the Lord, when I set a fire in Egypt and all her helpers are broken” (Ezek. 30:8); “Ethiopia was her might, and Egypt too, without limits. Put and Lubim were among her helpers” (Nah. 3:9).

In the New Testament, both men and women are described as helpers in the work of the church. In Romans 16:2, Paul says that Phoebe “has also been a helper of many, and of myself as well.” In Acts 13:5, Luke writes that Barnabas and Saul “also had John as their helper.”

What does that mean for us? Being a helper is an important trait for believers. Because God is often described as a helper, being a helper isn’t uniquely feminine. In marriage, the church, and society, men and women should help each other. How that works out in individual situations—for example, in a family—may vary depending on the season of life of the people involved, on God’s gifting and calling of them, and on their individual needs.
