Chapter Nine
“I can’t believe my mother actually drove all the way back to the city this morning.”
I flipped over the closed sign on the glass door of the tea shop with a little more force than necessary. I was beyond frustrated that my mother was so eager to leave after last night, disappearing as if nothing of substance had taken place.
It had.
I’d created magic.
Enchantments caused people and things to perform a desired action. It’s not a simple sphere of magic to cast, because nearly every type of spell required verbal, semantic, and material components.
And I’d succeeded.
I had stayed on the phone with Heidi for around five minutes after receiving her call, assuring her that everything was fine and that I was thinking of her too, which probably explained why she’d felt the need to connect.
We agreed I would see her Friday night when she came to visit.
It wasn’t right that I couldn’t tell her what was really happening in my life. That’s what best friends are for, and yet I was prohibited from revealing the most important part of who I was at the moment.
It figures your mother left. Why stay for the good stuff? She always did tend to run off when this life became too much for her to deal with.
“I don’t understand why. I mean, I’ve never felt connected like that, Leo.” I wandered over to the cash register, my knee-high boots still walking on air. Not literally, of course. But I haven’t been the same since casting that spell. Honestly, I wanted to recapture that euphoria again and again. “It was like…”
Magic?
“Don’t be so trite about such a special milestone,” I admonished, shooting him an irate glance. He was gazing out the display window and watching the street lamps come on one by one. The other shops were closing down for the evening, though everyone seemed to have their Christmas lights on a timer to shutdown much later than closing. Within minutes, colorful strands of blinking bulbs lined both sides of River Bay. Seeing as Heidi didn’t arrive until tomorrow, I could take the rest of the night to perfect another enchantment. “Let’s head back to the house, Leo. I want to try and cast another spell from Nan’s magical compendium. Maybe this one can give us some answers about Ben Stanway’s murder.”
The entire day had been spent hearing about the latest developments on the case from various customers. Candy had been one of the first shoppers of the day, giving her two cents about the rumor of Alison and Oliver Bend committing the murder together wearing rain slickers. That would explain why they didn’t get any blood on their clothes.
Candy hadn’t specified where she’d heard that piece of gossip, but she was unwavering in her belief of their innocence. I figured someone had been to the salon who was in full support of the Bends.
Otis had come by the shop, too, which was unusual for a Thursday. He usually picked up his special tea blend on Fridays, but he mentioned having a meeting with Detective Swanson tomorrow.
